Acids and bases have unique properties that play an important role in chemistry and everyday life. Acids release charged hydrogen atoms (H⁺) in water, making them sour and capable of corroding metals. Bases produce charged hydroxide particles (OH⁻), have a bitter taste, and are effective at removing grease and oils. When combined, they neutralize each other, forming salt and water in a reaction called neutralization.
